These horsetail shoots were gathered from the moist forest edges, streambanks, and seep zones of Washington's Gifford Pinchot National Forest, where saturated soils and dappled spring sunlight create the conditions field horsetail needs to push its earliest growth. They emerge in spring directly from extensive underground rhizomes — first as fertile, cone-tipped shoots, then as the tender sterile shoots that follow shortly after, both harvested before they branch and toughen. Cutting is done by hand under permit, taking shoots cleanly above the soil line and leaving the rhizome network intact so the colonies regenerate and return year after year.
