These fireweed shoots were gathered from disturbed slopes, forest margins, and open clearings of Washington's Gifford Pinchot National Forest, where the plant colonizes ground with characteristic speed after fire, logging, or windthrow. They emerge in early spring as tight, burgundy-tinged spears pushing up through mineral soil and ash-enriched duff — most tender in the first weeks before the stem elongates and the leaves fully unfurl. Harvest is done by hand under permit, cutting the young shoots cleanly at the base during the brief window when texture and flavor are at their peak, leaving the root crowns intact so the stands return the following season.
