Spring

These devil's club shoots were gathered from the moist conifer understory of Washington's Gifford Pinchot National Forest, where snowmelt-fed seeps and dense cedar-hemlock canopy create the cool, shaded, perpetually damp conditions the plant requires. They emerge in spring along stream corridors and low slopes, unfurling tender new growth from the tips of established canes before the spines harden. Harvest is done by hand under permit, taking only the terminal shoots from mature, well-established colonies and leaving the parent canes, root systems, and surrounding stand intact so the plants continue to grow and spread through their natural layering.
